Maha Al-Rasheed, a Ph.D. student at the University of Brighton and a lecturer in the Clinical Pharmacy Department at King Saud University’s College of Pharmacy, won first prize at the International Resident Research Day for her thesis titled “Effect of Medication on Thyroid Gland Hormone Genes.”
More than 30 research papers were discussed in oral dissertation, held in January at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh.
Ms. Al-Rasheed talked about the required genetic determinants for the Thyroxine dose for athyreotic patients who suffer from various cancers in the thyroid gland and the possible role of these determinants in the appearance of these cancers. Her study covered six different genes in sick and healthy individuals and was able to identify variable shape and onset genes.
