International Conference for Information and Network Security was organized from 2-3 May 2017 at Naif Arab University for Security Sciences, Saudi Arabia. The aim and objective of this conference were to bring together academia, government, private sector, and global experts to talk about the trending issues of Cybersecurity. The outcomes of this conference could help society, leaders and decision makers to secure organizations, businesses, and community. The need to address cybersecurity challenges has become a paramount concern as we anticipate towards an economy powered by connectivity, ICT, cloud computing, big data and the Internet of Things (IoT), etc. Public and private sectors can no longer invest in obsolete techniques of detection and protection and have to recognize how cybersecurity effects their strategy, competitiveness and sustainability.
Prof. Muhammad Khurram Khan from the Center of Excellence in Information Assurance (CoEIA) at King Saud University was invited as a keynote speaker at this overwhelming event. Prof. Khurram presented his keynote entitled, “Building Consumer Trust on Adopting IoT Enabled Products”. In his speech, Prof. Khurram shed light on the large-scale development and deployment of Internet of things (IoT) systems, which could play an instrumental role in our daily lives. He stated that there will be more than 50 billion connected devices by 2020 which would benefit us in different sectors e.g. healthcare, manufacturing, retail, energy, agriculture, bank, logistics, smart cities/homes/offices, and transportation, etc. In addition, linking the physical and the digital worlds via the IoT could create up to USD 11 Trillion in economic value annually by 2025, He further stated that through IoT, we would be able to take most benefits of physical and virtual worlds to improve our lifestyle, sustainability, and the planet.
"The agglomeration of embedded intelligence and Internet connectivity plays a key role in upheaving the paradigm of Internet of Things (IoT). Consumers embrace potential advantages of IoT products and applications because of the benefits and services they get. But when these smart IoT devices collect and share personal information, consumers become very concerned about the security of devices and privacy of their personal information. If reasonable security is not provided to consumers and their personal information is exploited for criminal acts, then trust upon adopting these IoT devices could be compromised. Hence, the prosperity and wide adoption of IoT devices is highly reliant on establishing consumer’s trust”, further elaborated on by him during the speech. He also highlighted some security and privacy concerns of this fascinating field, which researchers, manufacturers, developers, service providers, and scientists need to address for building robust and trustworthy IoT systems.
This conference was attended by a large number of attendees from public and private sectors, academicians, professionals, researchers, and students, etc. Several international attendees and speakers from the UK, Australia, Taiwan, Malaysia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, GCC, and Arab world, etc. also attended this event.
