In the Presence of the Dean of the College of Medicine, the Department of Surgery Presents 37 Research Papers at Its 23rd Annual Research Day

In the presence of the Dean of the College of Medicine at the university, Dr. Bandar bin Nasser Al-Jafen, the Department of Surgery organized the 23rd Annual Surgical Research and Recognition Day on Thursday, May 7, 2026, at the western building of the College of Medicine. The event witnessed broad participation from faculty members, trainees, and medical students, within the framework of supporting research activity and promoting a culture of academic and scientific excellence within the department. The occasion was attended by Prof. Adnan Bakr Mufti, along with several academic leaders, faculty members, and specialists from various surgical disciplines.

In his speech during the event, Dr. Al-Jafen emphasized that the Annual Surgical Research and Recognition Day reflects the college’s commitment to supporting academic and research excellence, noting that scientific research is a fundamental pillar in advancing medical sciences and improving the quality of healthcare. He praised the Department of Surgery’s progress in research productivity and its role in supporting young talents and fostering an environment of innovation and scientific collaboration.

For his part, the Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Prof. Abdulmajeed Al-Tuwaijri, explained that the annual research day represents an important scientific platform for showcasing the research output of faculty members and trainees, and for strengthening the environment of scientific research and academic collaboration among various surgical specialties. He pointed out that the participation of trainees and medical students in preparing and presenting studies reflects the department’s commitment to building a research-oriented generation capable of contributing to the advancement of medical knowledge and achieving the university’s research objectives.

He further noted that the event included the presentation of 22 research papers and 15 scientific posters, which were selected and reviewed by the department’s Scientific Research Committee. The topics covered general surgery and its branches, neurosurgery, pediatric surgery, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, urology, and plastic surgery, reflecting the diversity of scientific and research activities within the department.

The event also witnessed broad participation from trainees in medical fellowship programs, residency programs, interns, and medical students, who contributed to the preparation and presentation of research projects in preparation for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, supporting the development of their academic and research skills. The program included evaluation of research presentations by a specialized scientific committee aimed at providing feedback to researchers and selecting the best research papers and posters for awards and recognition. The event also included honoring several distinguished faculty members and trainees who contributed to the delivery of academic courses or achieved academic and professional excellence during the current academic year.

At the conclusion of the event, the winning research papers and scientific posters were announced. First place was awarded to Dr. Ruthana Al-Nahari, a trainee in the Colorectal Surgery Fellowship Program, for research conducted under the supervision of Prof. Maha Abdullah, professor and researcher in colorectal tumors, and Dr. Noura Al-Hassan, Associate Professor of Colorectal Surgery. The research is considered one of the outputs of the Center for Colorectal Surgery and Research and its contributions to high-value basic scientific research.

Second place was awarded to intern Dr. Muhannad Mallat for research in cervical spine surgery under the supervision of Prof. Amr Al-Habib, Professor of Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery.

Third place was jointly awarded to intern Dr. Reda Shihab for research in colorectal and intestinal anastomosis surgeries under the supervision of Dr. Sulaiman Al-Shammari, Assistant Professor of Colorectal Surgery and Peritoneal Surface Malignancies, and intern Alaa Al-Muajel for research in colorectal tumors under the supervision of Dr. Noura Al-Hassan, Associate Professor of Colorectal Surgery.

The award for Best Research Poster was granted to يوسف الحسيني, a trainee in the Trauma and Critical Care Surgery Fellowship Program, for research in head and brain injuries under the supervision of Dr. Nawaf Al-Shahwan, Assistant Professor of Trauma and Critical Care Surgery.

The Department of Surgery at the College of Medicine is considered one of the leading academic departments, comprising 83 faculty members across various surgical specialties. The organization of this annual event reflects the department’s ongoing efforts to support research productivity, encourage scientific excellence, and strengthen academic and training integration among its members.
