Events of the first international conference on biotechnology towards building a knowledge-based economy which is organized by the Center of Excellence for Biotechnology Research, King Saud University, began on Monday in the presence of His Excellency Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Khalid Al-Angari in King Fahd Cultural Center, Riyadh.
The ceremony started by recitation of the Holy Quran, and presided over by the Director of the Center of Excellence for Biotechnology Research, Professor Abdullah A. Al-Doss, delivered the word that the Conference focuses on issues; the most important one is the applications of biotechnology in medical sciences, agricultural sciences, environment and industrial biotechnology as well as an economic dimension investment.
The conference also includes ten scientific sessions, which discussed the latest developments in biotechnology and micro-applications of biotechnology in the pharmaceutical industry such as the production of vaccines, hormones and bio-safety of the products. Scientific sessions have also been allocated for research of cancer and allergic diseases. The other topics will cover are agriculture, molecular breeding, applications of plant biotechnology to improve resistance to heat, drought and the applications of genetic engineering in animal husbandry, he said.
The specific topics in the area of biotechnology applications in industrial and environment, will discuss the role of biotechnology in the processing and monitoring of biological pollution, and the production of enzymes on an industrial scale.
According to Dr. Al-Doss, the number of researchers participating in the conference are more than 150 between spokesmen and placard-participants in various applications of biotechnology in different fields, adding that the Center has attracted outstanding researchers as well as worked to promote the university's active research groups to submit their research suggestions, noting that the Center has funded seven research projects in its first round $11 million and is being prepared to support other eight research projects in the second round of supporting research projects.
He added that the Center has organized two training courses: the first has been in the techniques of separation and analysis of proteins and their applications in the medical field, and the second has been in the applications of molecular evidence in plants. The Center organized a series of significant scientific lectures as well.
Following that, His Excellency the Rector of King Saud University, Abdullah Al-Othman delivered his words, the center is one of the quality initiatives adopted by the Ministry of Higher Education and is one of the four projects supported by the Ministry of Higher Education for more than 200 million riyals.
He added that the Center of Excellence for Biotechnology Research strengthens the relationship of the University with other international universities and global excellence research centers pointing out that the center will be-by God's will- one of main means of fulfilling the ambition of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince- May God save them- to achieve a leading global university place , and that the university will develop- by God's will- in the area of education and scientific research.
Subsequently, the Center of Excellence for Biotechnology Research, King Saud University, gave a memorial gift to His Excellency the Minister of Higher Education Dr. Khalid Al-Angari. It was delivered to His Excellency by Dr. Al-Othman. The Center also provided a gift for each of His Excellency the Director of King Saud University and King Fahad Cultural Center. They were delivered by the Director of the research Excellence Center, Dr. Abdullah Al-Doss.
Following the ceremony, the Minister of Higher Education Dr. Khalid Al-Angari pointed out as a press declaration that the importance of the conference stems from its association with very important topics in a number of areas such as biotechnology, health or different scientific fields, hoping that the conference would produce useful results for the Center.
With regard to the allowances of the companions, scholars traveling abroad , His Excellency declared that the Ministry applies a number of resolutions and said these things are regulated according to the resolutions applied by the Ministry, and if there was a fault of a person in the process of exchange, this does not justify the continuation of the error.
On the other hand, His ExcellencyDr. Al-Othman revealed that the University must conform to the global variables to be a pioneer in the field of research and development, pointing out that the university had a very large potential in the infrastructure and the ability to attract creative and distinguished from the various countries of the world, making it be one of the main features of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
He added that one of the most critical technical components of the knowledge economy, confirming the non-emergence of any university if it does not exist with this specialization.
His Excellency clarified that university, through the first international conference on biotechnology, was able to attract more than 40 specialist scientists from more than 7 developed countries.
He pointed out that it is among the strategic objectives of the university to participate in human development, prompting the university to set up many branches in main provinces of Riyadh region, to reduce the migration, and to develop the provinces indicating that the disciplines covered by the branches is governed by a preparatory committee emanating from the ministerial committee involving the Ministry of Civil Service, the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy and Planning.
