Under the auspices of His Excellency the Rector of King Saud University (KSU) Professor Dr. Abdullah Al-Othman, the First psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis Conference will begin on Wednesday in Makarim Hall of Riyadh Marriott Hotel. The conference is organized by the College of Medicine, the Medical Education Centre in collaboration with the Research Chair for Psoriasis of KSU.
This was stated by Dr. Sami Al-Suweidan, the Chairman of the Conference Organizing Committee and the Supervisor of the Research Chair for Psoriasis who added that the scientific program of the conference includes the latest developments in the investigation of the causes of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, their diagnosis and treatment.
According to him the latest developments and research on the nature and causes of psoriasis, particularly those related to the immune and genetic aspects will be displayed. This is in addition to the modern and sophisticated treatments of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, especially the so-called biological therapy, and the recent developments in the optical treatment of psoriasis and the treatment of psoriasis of children. Lectures on the ideal dealing with psychological and social effects of psoriasis as well as the modern methods to raise the commitment of patients to use their medicines will also be delivered. International specialists will address the modern concept of the psoriatic arthritis disease and the therapeutic developments, particularly with regard to the immune and biological treatment. The scientific program will include for the first time, "the Experts Workshop", which will include at the same time, international experts in psoriasis along with international experts on psoriatic arthritis, to enrich the scientific aspect of this important and vital evolving subject in addition to a "similar experts’ workshop” for difficult cases.
Al-Suweidan said that the scientific program of the conference includes the organization of an intensive training course for optical treatment, regarded the first of its kind to be held in the Kingdom at this level. It will be attended by Professor James Ferguson, head of the Optical and Biological Treatment, in the Dundee University, United Kingdom and Professor Steve Feldman, President of Psoriasis, and Optical Treatment Centre of Wake Forest University, USA. This session will highlight in detail the big and modern developments of the new concept of optical treatment and its new advances. It will talk about the UVA-1 treatment and the dynamic optical and extra corporeal treatment. This is in addition to the level of safety and effectiveness of this treatment. The new developments in the treatment of psoriasis and vitiligo and hardening of the skin and skin tumours, eczema and other skin diseases will also be addressed by the conference. As part of the conference a workshop will be held to conduct a practical and direct examination of the joints by international and local experts, including Professor Philip Hlewyll of the British Leed University and Professor Oliver Fitzgerald of the University of Dublin, Ireland, and Professor Abdul Rahman Al Arfaj from King Saud University.
Al-Suweidan noted that this conference was approved by the Saudi Council for Health Specialties for 14-hour continuing medical education. He pointed out that the target category includes consultants and doctors of dermatology, rheumatism, internal medicine, family and community medicine and pharmacy specialists.
Al-Suweidan called on specialists, trainees and interested people in this vital area to participate in the activities of the Conference.
