Modeling of electron beam melting based additive manufacturing

Dr. Ashfaq Mohammad from Advanced Manufacturing Institute presented a lecture on modeling of electron beam melting.

Dr. Ashfaq stated in his lecture, the success of electron beam melting depends on a wide array of settings and their interaction during the process. For example, beam parameters determine the size of the melt pool and heat input to the powder. These in turn determine the microstructure and residual stresses in the solidified material. Because of the complexity of the process, an FEM model can help in breaking down the system and enables us to concentrate only on a few phenomena at a time.

In this talk, Dr. Ashfaq showed, how an FEM model was built along with the assumptions. Initial results gave the temperature distribution for different scan speeds. It was also found that, temperature varying physical properties of the material would give better results when compared to static ones.
