In the context of its dedication to excellence and appreciation of the spirit of creativity and innovation, King Saud University has set out on implementing its recently adopted motivational policy towards enhancing the potential for giftedness among its students, and helping them achieve the highest standards of scientific knowledge. To this effect, His Excellency University Rector, Abdullah Al-Othman honored one of the University’s gifted female students by granting her SR 20,000, along with the University Gold Medal, and by pledging to fund her research project and to cover her patent registration costs to the American Patent Office. Pledging a research fund of SR 100,000, Dr. Al-Othman ordered to carry out the student’s wish and that of her supervisor, Dr. Awatif Ahmad Hindi, Deputy Chairman of the Department of Physics, to pursue the development and crystallization of the core substance of her research project through cooperation with one of the research centers in Japan, in order to convert it into a valuable economic product. Asseel Abdurrahman Mohammad Al-Wabel is in her final year of the Bachelor Degree Program at the College of Science, Department of Physics. Her invention, named A & J, is geared to help prevent theft and burglary and protect private property.
Asseel’s invention is made up of two parts: a wooden box and a portable wireless communication device. The box includes an alarm system and a control switch with a transmission range of up to sixty meters. It is operated by self-contained batteries, and is equipped with sensors and an electrical shock system. The user would set the desired range (one meter, for instance) on the portable device, and when the box is moved outside this range the alarm system would send off a loud whistling sound startling the intruder. Any attempt to turn off the system is rewarded with an electric shock from the box strong enough to knock out unconscious the intruder for a few moments without killing him/her. After all, the invention is only intended to help prevent theft and burglary, and maximize the protection of private property.
Asseel Al-Wabel took the opportunity to express her deep gratitude to His Excellency Dr.Al-Othman for his support and encouragement of students’ research efforts. She pointed out that the current invention represents a promising and fruitful potential, and that “our caring University has always stood by us in our learning and discovery endeavors. We wish the University success and progress under the leadership of His Excellency the Rector.”
As to Dr. Awatif Ahmad Hindi, Deputy Chairman of the Department of Physics and the project supervisor, she hailed the honoring gesture commending His Excellency’s responsiveness and his willingness to provide students, particularly the female ones, with all the care and assistance they need to achieve creativity and excellence. Dr. Hindi mentioned that the least one can do in this respect is express one's gratitude to His Excellency for his kind gesture, which is expected to give our female students at the university a strong boost for further creativity and excellence.
It is worth mentioning that King Saud University has recently announced the birth of the Distinguished Research Creativity Center at the University, which is aimed at transforming such ideas into successful and valuable projects. This would enhance the Saudi economy and create the incentive to embrace modern technology and knowledge-based industry at the individual and institutional levels. The Center is also intended to create a research market in which outstanding ideas are exploited in order to accomplish success, and, therefore, give international prominence to the Kingdom. The market would also be an opportunity to explore individuals with such potentials and to help them shape and crystallize their ideas as well as choose appropriate professional careers. At the same time the market would offer a chance to attract capital investment in the projects born out of such ideas and bolster the rapport between the government and the industrial sectors, the investors and the project designers. The Center gives away SR 400,000 worth of prizes for the top 30 research projects. In addition, the project designer is given a percentile portion of the revenues in case the project materializes. Such a measure is validated through the signing of binding contracts and the percentile portion is determined in accordance with the type and size of the investment. The Center undertakes to crystallize, assess, and determine the validity and applicability of the project on the ground before proceeding to market and then implement it with its partners. It is also the duty of the Center to carry out the registration task of the prospective patents issued for such projects with all the rights and privileges there appertaining.
