1998 Nobel winner Louis Ignarro, along with an accompanying delegation from the Universityof Kansas, was received by King Saud University Rector Abdullah Al-Othman on 25th May, 2008.
At the beginning of the meeting, Dr. Al-Othman welcomed the distinguished guests, and stressed the fact that the Kingdom is witnessing an economic boom and that its present strategy, in light of its wise leadership, greatly emphasizes education and knowledge in order to ensure the well-being of future Saudi generations. Professor Ignarro, on his side, welcomed the mutual cooperation with King Saud University.
After the meeting, Dr. Al-Othman, accompanied by Professor Ignarro headed for the workshop organized by King Abdullah Institute for Nanotechnology on the Chinese Experience in Nano Industry, where Professor Ignarro signed a contract of services with the University. It stipulates that Professor Ignarro has to supervise a research Chair on disease of the peripheral blood vessels, carry out mutual scientific researches, and train graduate students and researchers from the University's medical colleges.
It is worth mentioning that Professor Ignarro's scientific research led to the development of Viagra, an efficient drug used to treat impotency, and that hopefully, one day, it will lead to the overcome of conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke, and atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). In addition, Professor Ignarro is considered as one of the most outstanding world scientists for his discovery of the role of nitric oxide as a signalling molecule in the cardiovascular system, which qualified him and two of his colleagues for the Nobel Prize in Medicine for 1998.
