Under the patronage and presence of His Excellency, Rector Abdullah Al-Othman and His Excellency Ali Al-Ghamdi, King Saud University Vice Rector for Branches Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Al-Sheikh, the Kingdom's ambassador to France inaugurated in France on Thursday 12/6/2008, King Saud University's first lab outside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
On this occasion, Dr. Al-Othman affirmed that this lab came into being because of the recommendations of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, as well as those of His Excellency Prof. Khalid Al-Angari, Minister of Higher Education.
Professor Jean-Laurent Casanova, the renowned French scientist in the field of infectious disease-causing genes took part in the inauguration of this satellite lab along with a medical research team from King Saud University led by Dr. Saleh bin Zaid Al-Muhsen, supervisor of the program for genetic studies.
Dr. Al-Othman declared that this lab is a scientific accomplishment and a practical outcome of the research service contracts signed with French universities during Dr. Al-Angari's visit to France. After referring to the importance of this lab, Dr. Al-Othman stated that in order to achieve world leadership, King Saud University is planning to establish other external labs in Max Planck Institute (Germany), University of Leeds(England), the University of Illinois (USA), Shanghai University (China), IITs (India), and Singapore National University (Singapore).
On his part, Dr. Al-Ghamdi declared that the inauguration of this lab represents a major opportunity for researchers and post-graduate students from the College of Medicine at King Saud University to carry out joint research with their counterparts from Necker Center, under the supervision of Professor Casanova. Dr. Al-Ghamdi added that the idea behind the satellite lab is to provide Saudi researchers with a rich research environment which will allow them to transfer knowledge and advanced technologies to the Kingdom through King Saud University.
Dr. Al-Mohsen, on the other hand, stated that the importance of this project, which is the first in the Arab world, lies in the results that it will achieve.
