King Saud University becomes member of Deanship of Graduate studies of the United States and Canada.  To achieve the objectives of the university’s global leadership and competition, the Deanship of Graduate Studies has sought to achieve prerequisites and rules for admission to membership to the North American Board of Graduate Studies.

During the past three months, the Dean has been able to prepare a comprehensive file about the university that met all the necessary conditions  to fulfill the requirements for obtaining the membership of the Council.

Membership Committee's recommendations had been issued to approve King Saud University membership of the United States and Canada Board of Graduate Studies Deanship, in March 2009. King Saud University is the first Saudi University which obtained the membership of this Council, which includes more than 500 Canadian and American Universities in addition to other international universities.

The universities which form this organization supervise more than 94% of Ph.D. thesis and 80% of masters' degrees in America and Canada.

This Council focuses on the progress of postgraduate programs through follow-up and continuous review and evaluation of programs affiliated to it and provides necessary guidance to resolve problems facing universities and seeks the best ways to attract extraordinary students from all over the world.

The Council has begun recently to involve universities from around the world in its activities, particularly with regard to the promotion of joint programs between universities in America and elsewhere in Europe, Australia and Asia.

The King Saud University represented by its Graduate Deanship has attended the 48th annual Conference of the Council, which was held in Washington in the United States in December Month of the year 2008. The deanship examined the conditions required for the membership of the Council, the most important is the diversity of postgraduate programs and the material and moral supports from the university as well the appropriateness of the terms of the Council's criteria for acceptance, and graduation and student affairs.

This achievement of King Saud University came as a result of its diverse and distinct programs. On this occasion the Deanship of Graduate Studies congratulates those in charge of responsible of higher and university education and the University administration on this achievement and thanks them for their support and efforts.

The Dean also congratulates graduate students for the university winning this seat.

The Dean of Graduate Studies offers his sincere thanks and appreciation to His Excellency and the Deputy Deans and all employees for their outstanding work and dedicated efforts.

The dean of graduate studies Dr. Mohammed Al-Sheikh disclosed that the post-graduate studies of King Saud University was established more than 35 years ago with only one masters degree student program, but now it provides more than 60 masters programs and 30 Ph.D. program in various disciplines.

The main vision of the Deanship of Graduate Studies, King Saud University, is the depth of scientific research in the postgraduate programs by focusing on quality standards that enable King Saud University, to assume an advanced position among the regional and global universities in the post-graduate sector. And draw a system for its programs that obtain the adoption of the specialized bodies and covering all disciplines available in the university in particular programs that are vital to the outputs of education and scientific research that contribute actively in the process of development march of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in its comprehensive concept.

The most important characteristic of this stage is the focus on the quality of programs and that its outputs are compatible with the requirements of the development phase of the Kingdom, especially as the University looks forward to global competition in terms of output and quality of leadership in the areas of scientific research.

Since the postgraduate studies are the most important tributary of scientific research, the University has focused on its advancement. The review and evaluation of programs joint programs and provision of joint programs with leading universities is one of the most important milestones in this phase.

The unified list of Higher Studies is the most important element in quality control, it has codified many of the controls and procedures and thus there was no question of discretion in the application procedures and regulations of postgraduate studies.

In spite of the many strengths of this regulation, however, that there are some regulations and controls that may need to be modified and developed, especially that the postgraduate programs of King Saud University is developing and in continuous update as indicated previously. These points to the need for their development and modification to conform to the needs and size of programs offered at the University.

King Saud University is undergoing an unprecedented comprehensive development, and the Deanship of Graduate Studies is a major focus for the university to depend upon in its advancement. Therefore the Deanship of Graduate Studies must ride the train of renaissance and development, led by His Excellency the Vice-chancellor of the University. The Deanship has put in a number of development measures refer some of these include:

  1. Reducing administrative procedures to speed up work.

The Deanship has adopted various measures such as the delegation of some duties of student affairs at the graduate studies to the Faculties in line with the pursuit of the Deanship's policy to facilitate and ease procedures and to reduce red tape in addition to its keenness to take advantage of all modern technology provided by the university at this time.

2. Automatic registration:

During this semester, automated registration system was adopted for graduate students after a year of continuous work by the Deanship of Graduate Studies and Deanship of Admission and Registration and the Company that is implementing the automated registration program at King Saud University to develop a program that serves all the objectives and requirements of postgraduate studies and facilitate the process of obtaining the required information on the students electronically.

3. Admission through the university portal:

During this academic year, applications for admission were received through e-mails. Next year applications for admission to graduate studies will be through the portal of the University Insha'Allah this, of course facilitates many of the procedures for applicants.

4. The Program of Evaluation and review of academic programs.

Currently the Deanship of Graduate Studies is seeking to establish strong links with prestigious international universities and organizations; this is regarded as a key factor in the development of postgraduate programs, which is also a goal within the objectives being pursued by the Deanship of Graduate Studies, King Saud University to achieve.

Work is now in progress to coordinate with many British and American universities and organizations to cooperate with them in the application of postgraduate programs.

5. Increasing the percentage of admission to postgraduate programs and increasing the number of students admitted.

More than 1500 students are admitted a year, the Deanship is facing a significant challenge in terms of the large number of students who wish to join the post-graduate programs at King Saud University.

In line with keenness of the Deanship control quality, the expansion in the number of admissions does not take place except after a careful study to fill this requirement, therefore the Deanship of Graduate Studies in collaboration with various colleges has launched master's degree programs through curriculums in order to increase the admissions in addition to the release of several programs of parallel education system. These programs will have positive results of these programs in raising the admission capacity.

Perhaps one of the most important characteristic of postgraduate studies at King Saud University, is the high competition among applicants for admission and thus the students enrolled in the programs are distinguished leading to greater competition and excellence, which earned a lot of confidence of local and international universities to send their students on scholarships to continue their higher studies at King Saud University.

6. A Council for male students and another for female students as Deanship of Graduate Studies seek to enhance the links between it and the students. The deanship has prepared several programs to increase these links including the program for male graduate students' council and another for female graduate students where representatives of the Deanship participate with them; the main objective is to identify the most important barriers to Graduates Studies Students' and find appropriate solutions to them.

This program is a step towards increasing the participation of the student in making decisions that serve the graduate studies and reflected on the aspects of rehabilitation of the students.

7. "Tawasul" Program for male and female graduates aims to follow up postgraduate students and increase their outreach and their association with the University.

8. The translation of documents of interest to Graduate Studies into English language. The Deanship has translated the Unified regulations for postgraduate studies in Saudi universities and will soon issue it in booklets in English for the non-Arabic speakers to benefit from it. Other Saudi universities could as well benefit from these efforts.

Finally, the Deanship of Graduate Studies was accustomed to live in dynamic movement and has always sought to advance its performance to achieve higher goals and strategies of the University.

Last but not least, we thank the Administration of the University for their Continuous Support and encouragement of all the efforts of the Deanship's development programs. Thanks also to the undersecretaries of the deanship and units directors and all the colleagues who are working as one team and which had a key role in the progress and development of the Post Graduate Studies in the university.
